Here is my understanding of the revised rule on wearing the seatbelt.<p></p><blockquote><p>All occupants of the car are expected to wear seatbelt, not just the driver. If any occupant is not wearing the seatbelt, each of them will be fined ₹1,000/-.</p></blockquote><p>Indeed, wearing a seatbelt is for your own safety, however, by not wearing the seatbelt are you causing any inconvenience or danger to other vehicles? I am at a loss to understand this.</p><p>Traffic Police's first aim should be to ensure that vehicles follow traffic discipline. What are the various acts that can cause danger to other people on the road? Here are some of them :</p><p></p><ul style="text-align: left;"><li>Jumping traffic signal</li><li>Jumping lanes</li><li>Ignoring One Way/No Entry</li><li>Overspeeding</li><li>Honking</li><li>Rash Driving</li><li>Drunk Driving</li><li>Driving without valid licence</li><li>Parking in No Parking zones / Pavements</li></ul><div>These traffic indiscipline can lead to serious accidents and inconvenience to other users, hence fine for breaking these rules are justified and are must.</div><div><br /></div><div>However, endangering your own safety by not wearing seatbelt does not endanger any other road users. I am indulging in some doomsday soothsaying. Just for the heck of it. Whether it makes any sense to you or not, it does not matter. For now, this doesn't make any sense to me either :-D<br />

Our economy seems to be behaving like a tired snail!<br />
<br />
Reserve Bank of India has cut the repo rate 4 times in the past 12 months. They usually announce repo rates every two months. So, 4 out of 6 times they announced rate cut. In last 1 year, from 6.50%, the repo rate has been brought down to 5.40%. The repo rate controls the availability of funds to the investors and businesses. Lower the rate, higher the demand for the money. Or, that's what I understand from my limited knowledge of the financial market.<br />
<br />
The Government data showed that the GDP growth has slowed down to 5%. Whatever that means. I am told it is not good, okay?<br />
<br />
In August 2019, Indian banks have written off Rs.2.54 lakh crore in bad loans. Written off. Just to get their books to show lesser NPAs. I wish I had taken just 0.01% of it (that's Rs.25 crores!).<br />
<br />
Not many takers for the real estate market. Not many takers for automobile market. I also hear that underwear market is down. Reason, it seems is, millennials are renting out homes and cars and not buying them. However, I can't understand why underwear market is down. Millennials, what's up? ;-)<br />
<br />
Millennials are not marrying, not interested in children..so marriage market is down and baby product markets are down too. Let's not talk about maternity hospitals...they are getting their share of money through ...well...yes, you got it!<br />
<br />
Jet Airways crash landed financially and closed down. Not many people are flying nowadays. Not much is happening over coffee too...<br />
<br />
And in the agriculture sector...there are floods and there are droughts...and there are farmers with loans and noose tightening around their necks...<br />
<br />
So, based on all these "signs" :<br />
<br />
Since the demand (in above sectors are low), it is impacting its production and hence its impacting number of production hours and therefore number of jobs are impacted too.<br />
<br />
When people don't have jobs, they don't have money. They don't have money, they can't pay their EMIs. Oh..now I understand why underwear business is down...they stop buying clothes and underwears too. They stop eating out, swiggying, zomatoing, flipkarting, amazoning, ubering, olaing, etc.etc. So, joblessness is bringing down virtually everything - which is part of what we call is "economy".<br />
<br />
When they can't pay their EMIs, banks take their homes/cars and auction them. Since the demand is low, there are no biddings there too.<br />
<br />
So, people end up without jobs, banks end up with tonnes of NPAs, businesses close down, government loses tax revenue, so they increase tax rates, lots of To Let boards come up. Lots of For Sale boards come up.<br />
<br />
Now, people are worried about the economy, so people who do have jobs and money, they are more cautious about spending. That will contribute to slow down. Banks are not paying much interest on FDs. Stock markets are volatile. So, even with money in your pocket, you don't have much to do.<br />
<br />
So, what's the way out?<br />

<br />
Millennials, start buying cars! Start buying homes! Borrow and spend your entire lifetime in paying EMIs!<br />
<br />
<b>Save the economy!</b><br />

Only Indians, Parliamentarians of India and the Judiciary of India has this right.</span></div>

Criminal investigation methods largely depend upon torturing the body of the accused to make their mind spill the beans. Vishwamitra tried very hard to control his mind from fulfilling his bodily desires, but his mind gave up when Menaka seduced him.</span><br />

Only a master narrator like Vishal Bharadwaj can do justice to this Shakespearean masterpiece in contemporary setting and that too with a new twist!<br />

Haider, which is based on the Kashmir conflict where I could relate Tabu's character of Hamlet's Gertrude with current state of Kashmir, which is married to India but flirting with Pakistan. She has brought out the trials and tribulations of a "half-widow" state. KayKay has done an amazing job of portraying Pakistan's character through Claudious who uses "terrorist" (Mukhberins) under his control to kill people who are in his way. And, of course, Shahid has done a wonderful job of portraying the current generation of Kashmir through the character of Hamlet. Shraddha has done a good job with Ophelia's character.<br />
<br />
I loved the twist in the tail (If you have not seen Haider, please stop reading from here).<br />
<br />
As Gandhiji had said, an eye for an eye will make the whole nation blind - this message is delivered very well through this 2 hours 40 minutes saga on Kashmir. Optimist Vishal created a twist in the end where Hamlet stops from killing half-dead Claudious. To me, it seemed that current generation of Kashmir has realised that vindictive and revengeful mindset will not help bring peace and there is no point in wasting bullets on Pakistan which will meet its painful end of his own making (Tabu's suicide by blowing herself off leaves KayKay limbless and nearly dead, suggesting destruction of traditional Kashmir will hurt Pakistan greatly).<br />

A very intense movie that does full justice to the original master-piece, Hamlet.<br />

It is one thing to aspire for something and its entirely another
thing to achieve it. Even though I am a left-leaning liberal, I admire
Narendra Modi for having the ability to achieve what he aspires for. He
has created such a cult like following that he is considered to be no
less than a super-human. Forget about criticizing him, even if you term
his achievements as ordinary or less than ordinary, you will invite
wrath from die-hard Modi-fans. And, never even try to highlight
achievements of his opponents. If anybody can turn a Modi-fan away from
Modi, is Modi himself!<br />
<br />
On one hand I admire him as
an able leader and on the other hand I dread his far-right ideology of
authoritarianism. Whether I like it or not, the perception that he has
created for himself (which is reaping benefits for his party), he will
be in Delhi for a long long time. As an authoritarian, his first agenda
will be to systematically weed out any challenger within or outside his
party.<br />
<br />
He has smartly worked on two things. One -
systematically demolish the credibility of his opponents and two -
amplify his own credibility. Am I complaining as a left-leaning liberal?
No. Its all fair in love and war - and winning election is no less than
a war.<br />
<br />
As a liberal voter, I am accustomed to
evaluating candidates based on their performances and/or credibility. I
don't know about others, but I am not accustomed to voting for a party
or for a personality or out of sympathy or empathy. (Yes, clean sweep
after Indira Gandhi's assassination was out of sympathy. Fortunately, I
was not eligible to vote back then.) Because, chances of going wrong are
very high if I vote based on these criteria.<br />
<br />
I am more wary of
candidates who misrepresent or distort facts to win votes. I am
extremely wary of candidates who base their campaign on weaknesses of
their opponents rather than their own strengths. And, voting blindly for
a candidate because he/she is contesting from a specific party - its a
no-no.<br />
<br />
If a Congress supporter considers voting for any candidate
just because Rahul Gandhi is considered to be the PM candidate, I would
say s/he is doing a big mistake that will cost our nation very dear.
Not because Rahul Gandhi is considered to be a novice in politics but
because this supporter will end up voting for a local candidate who does
not deserve his/her vote. Same goes for Modi supporter (I don't think
there are as many supporters out there for his party). Same goes for
Kejriwal and his party.<br />
<br />
Media, esepcially the electronic media,
has played a very vital role in creating this larger-than-life
perception of Modi. This was further amplified by crude and derogatory
comments about his opponents on social media like Facebook, Twitter and
Whatsapp. In a nutshell, I would say, it has been an excellent brand
building by Modi's brand managers. Ironically, I am also indulging in
creating an image of Modi which is larger than life :-)<br />
<br />
Many well known academicians and achievers have expressed their concerns over Modi's rise. But, all on deaf ears and blind eyes.<br />
<br />
After
May 16, when Modi will emerge as a clear winner, how will he tackle
issues that are of national importance? Will he emerge larger than his
parent organization RSS? Will he turn a blind eye (like he did in 2002)
when his "well-wishers" try to shred the fabric of unity and integrity
using racial overtones? Will he protect our democracy and freedom?<br />
<br />
I
don't know anything about that, only time will tell. But, one thing I
am sure about is that the large corporates are going to benefit hugely
from largesse of Modi.<br />

There are three basic political ideologies. Conservatism, Liberalism and Socialism/Communism. Since independence, Indian politics is centered around liberal ideology - Sometimes leaning towards Conservatism and sometimes towards Socialism/Communism, but predominantly on Liberal lines.<br />
<br />
2014 is bringing in an ideological shift in Indian politics. It seems to be moving right towards Conservative ideology. Farther right to this would take us to Anarchy. This will certainly make the Liberals lean heavily towards left to keep the balance. If they move too far towards left, it would take us to Anarchist Communism. Over a period of time, Indian politics will become bi-polar like in the west, Conservative and Liberal. <br />
<br />
What will be the impact on citizens?<br />
<br />
Economy, human resource development, environment, law and order and social harmony are defined by the dominant political ideology. Since we are witnessing a shift, initially there will be a degree of resistance to change. If resistance is high, ideology will shift again in the next election.<br />
<br />
In the recent past, we have witnessed ideological shifts. During '77, '89, '96, '98, '99 and last in 2004. At an every attempt, there was a decrease in resistance towards Conservatism. Many states have also witnessed ideological shifts, for e.g. West Bengal and Kerala.<br />
<br />
As we vote in this election, we are endorsing a specific ideology. Not many of us have studied politics so not many of us are aware of what are the pros and cons of each of these ideologies. It would be better to look up the pros and cons of these ideologies. Maybe you can lookup with keywords of "Conservatism" and "Liberalism".<br />
<br />
Since India is a representative democracy, whatever your leanings are, you must go and vote to endorse your ideology.</div>

2002 Gujarat riots are spoken about, 1984 riots are used as counter
arguments. Whenever 1992 riots are spoken about, 1984 riots are used as

are used as the counter arguments.<br />

Please allow me to take the
hue out of these incidences and present to you a black and white picture
to clarify what my stand is. If you agree with this stand, I urge you
to share this view.<br />
<br />
In 1984, a leader of a political party was
assassinated. After her assassination, people who sympathized with that
political party and leader incited their Indian supporters to kill
Indians to avenge the death of their leader. They used the emotion of an
average Indian to inflict mayhem on their fellow Indians. In the
process, thousands of Indians were killed and hundreds of thousands of
Indians were rendered homeless.<br />
<br />
In 1992, a political party and
another group of Indians, incited large part of Indians to demolish a
400 year old structure and thereafter go on a rampage in Mumbai to kill
and maim their fellow Indians. In the process, thousands of Indians were
killed and hundreds of thousands of Indians were rendered homeless.<br />
<br />
In 2002, following an incidence where 60 Indians were burnt in a bogie
of a train in Godhra by few Indians, a large part of Indians were
provoked by patrons of a political organization to kill and maim their
fellow Indians. In the process, hundreds of Indians were killed and
hundreds of thousands of Indians were displaced.<br />
<br />
In 2014,
following an altercation and murder of an Indian, many political parties
incited Indians to kill Indians in Muzaffarnagar. In the process, many
Indians were killed and thousands of Indians were rendered homeless.<br />
<br />
By adding color of ideology and religion, same political parties and
their supporters are justifying killing of Indians by Indians in these
separate incidences. Every political party uses these incidences to
defame their opponents. Their only aim is to defeat their political
opponents. Ironically, its not their aim (or in their interest) to bring
justice to the victims and punishing the perpetrators and conspirators.<br />
<br />
What will happen in future? Some political party will incite Indians to
kill Indians and justify by pointing fingers at 1984, 1992, 2002, 2014
etc. When will this stop? How will this stop?<br />
<br />

Who is worthy of my vote? This question was troubling me since last
many months. I was not satisfied with my own answers to this question.
But, today, at B.PAC organized meet with the candidates clarified many
things and I could come up with one definite answer that I was satisfied
with.<br />
<br />
After a series of scams that rocked the UPA-II, I was
feeling quite lost for an answer. Then came assembly elections and AAP
won 26 seats in Delhi. I saw a ray of hope. I started liking AAP.
However, my happiness was short-lived. AAP could not provide a model of
governance which was self-sustaining and long lasting. There was no
diplomacy or polity in their approach. AAP came across as a
confrontationist party to me.<br />
<br />
I was back to square one with the
question. I started seriously considering BJP for my vote. Somehow, I
did not feel it right to vote for just any BJP candidate just because
Narendra Modi, who has provided stable governance in Gujarat for last 12
years, was at the helms. I held a view that person who is capable of
representing my constituency and resolve issues of my constituency
should get my vote, irrespective of which party s/he belongs to or who
is his/her leader.<br />

few days ago, I came to know about the candidates contesting to
represent my constituency. They are; sitting MP Mr.PC Mohan from BJP,
Mr.Rizwan Arshad from Congress, Mr. V Balakrishna from AAP and Ms.
Nandini Alva of JDS. I was trying to gather some information about these
candidates but was not convinced about anybody.<br />
<br />
I was considering NOTA at this moment.<br />
<br />
On
Saturday morning, I got a call from Sandhya, a fellow Rotarian, about
BPAC meeting. I thought, let me give it one more go to see if I can
learn something about these candidates. So, I happily agreed to join her
and other friends. I am glad I took the trouble to wake up early on a
sunday morning and go for the meeting.<br />
<br />
I went with an open mind
to evaluate the ability of the candidates irrespective of their party or
religion. Meeting began after formal introductions. It was an
interesting format where a set of 4 questions were asked to each
candidate and they were given 4 minutes time to respond to each
question. Later, audience questions were asked and then concluding
comments by candidates. The event started dot at 10am and finished at
11.30am as planned. I was impressed.<br />
<br />
Questions were, “why do you
think you are eligible to represent this constituency?”, “What issues
would you focus on?”, “What is your vision?” and “How will you make
yourself reachable and accountable?”<br />
<br />
First question was a usual
drill and everyone spoke well. However, Balakrishna and Rizwan Arshad
came across a bit more refined, realistic and focused. PC Mohan came
across as disciplined but to me he lacked substance and appeared
defensive. Nandini Alva impressed me with her good vocabulary but again,
I did not find any focus or substance in her speech.<br />
<br />
Subsequent
questions were handled differently by candidates. Again, I was convinced
by the points put forward by Balakrishna and Rizwan Arshad.<br />
<br />
I was hoping to find only one capable candidate, but here I found two candidates I could choose from. This was not acceptable.<br />
<br />
So, after giving it a long hard thought, finally I made my choice.<br />
<br />
I
am not a member of any political party nor am I a campaign manager for
any candidate, hence I feel it is inappropriate for me to share my
choice openly on a public forum. In my view, every voter is matured
enough to make his/her choice correctly by following a process of
selection. What I have shared here is the process that I followed to
make my choice.</div>

Such a simple quote that sets you free from the shackles of "have to be" and you start floating freely and aimlessly in celebration of this freedom "to be".<br />
<br />
Celebration, as usual, lasts only for a few moments that make you happy and cheerful - make you forget the pain that you had to go through number of times to earn this moment of celebration. In this moment, everything is forgotten and everyone is forgiven. Sadly, this moment is also destined to the confines of good, cherishable memories.<br />
<br />
Memories are deceptive. Moments that you really want to forget crop up every now and then and make you cringe. Hastily you try to shrug it off by getting busy in doing something that you did not plan to do. Somehow those painful memories cry out louder to get your attention.<br />
<br />
Once it succeeds in getting your attention, it curses you for causing such memories! How thankless these memories can be! You start protesting helplessly and put the blame on circumstances, people, god and those stars and planets where life is not known to exist. Naturally, the memory retreats unconvinced to return later with more questions, like an innocent child.<br />
<br />
Children! They have lots of questions. The moment they start talking in their cute broken language, they start asking "what is this?" and "what is that?". You happily tell them the names of those objects which does not really mean anything to them. So, they become curious and try to get closer to those objects to investigate with their curious little minds and hands. You are horrified and scream - "its FIRE…don't touch!". The child turns back, looks at you in bewilderment and starts asking you a series of why questions. Why!? Because its hot! Why? It will burn you! Why?! Why?! Why is it this and why is it that?! You run out of answers and more importantly patience and throw up your hands and say - I don't know!<br />
<br />
After many years you realize that you shouldn't have uttered that phrase. "I don't know" comes back at you like darts and bullets from every conceivable angles from the child who is now grown up. Who broke that glass? I don't know. Why did you fare so badly in your exams? I don't know. When will you be back from the party? I don't know. And you start banging your head against that "I don't know" wall in exasperation.<br />
<br />
Controlling an exasperated mind is a real task. Sometimes it makes you sulk and go silent for days and sometimes it makes you yell at the top of your voice. Whichever way, it causes darkness of unpleasantness all around and envelops you. You become blind to everything. Love, joy and peace become invisible. You start feeling lonely, depressed and you stretch out your hand in darkness and hope for someone to bail you out. You try to shout out in desperation to get help, but your ego strangles you, chokes your voice. You wrestle with your ego for a while and finally give up and slip into a state resembling coma.<br />
<br />
This bloodless, fleshless, shapeless ego is quite peculiar. It is always with you, 24x7. Its like a balloon. It grows bigger with every blow of appreciation and acknowledgement. Many times it takes help of wind of malice to rise higher. Its so fragile that a pinprick of criticism can take its wind out. But, it keeps coming back like a bad penny. It claims to be your only savior, but more often than not it is trying to drown you. It keeps you drowned in the cesspool of false glory mixed with unfounded fears.<br />
<br />
I sit down and think about being free from the clutches of this fragile ego. In order to be myself, I need to come out of this cesspool and let the harsh realities strike me like rays of afternoon sun, burn every drop of false glory and unfounded fears from every pore of my existence and tear off that deep seated mask of pretense from my being.<br />

In 2003, Rotary Club of Bangalore, the premier Rotary Club in Rotary International <span style="text-align: justify;">District 3190, decided to recognize excellence in the vibrant voluntary sector of the city </span>– to identify and honour organizations working for the community - and give an annual ROTARY SERVICE AWARD. As the voluntary sector is very large – over 2000 NGOs in Karnataka and 1000 in Bangalore – they select one group or activity each year for recognition.</div>

Rotary Club of Bangalore, recognizes eminent people and organizations in many areas, annually. The club give the Corporate Citizenship Award to a company who achieves social responsibilities with excellence, the Citizen Extraordinaire Award to true leaders in Bangalore, and the Vocational Service Award to people working in services like the BBMP or State Transport, or in an NGO. Equally, they recognize young persons for their scientific inventions, debating and quizzing.</div>

The average citizen is sadly unaware of the excellent voluntary work going on around us. The Rotary Service Award was instituted to give deserving voluntary organizations due recognition, some publicity of their work, and to help increase awareness and support for such initiatives in our city. To fulfil this aim, Rotary Club of Bangalore has collaborated with ‘<a href="http://www.bangalorecares.in/" target="_blank">Bangalore Cares</a>,’ a voluntary organisation, which believes the voluntary sector is a vital and vibrant part of society, contributing significantly to solving human problems in the community. The organization also organizes training and research, and has produced directories of voluntary organisations; in addition, they help Rotary District 3190 to organise SEVA SETHU - a meet of voluntary organizations with companies, government, media and</div>
interested public.<br />

In the case of the Rotary Service Awards, Bangalore Cares helps Rotary Club of Bangalore to collect data from voluntary organisations in Bangalore, to get nominations for the awards, and then select the winner of the Award.</div>

The Rotary Service Awards are given on the basis of defined parameters to be fulfilled <span style="text-align: justify;">by eligible voluntary organisations:-</span></div>

<li><b>Inspiration</b>: They will be setting a high standard of service and effectiveness, perhaps made possible by strong and committed leadership</li>
<li><b>Impact</b>: They will be able to demonstrate a major impact on government policy or public understanding or service to the community, leading to positive change for the community at large, especially to the benefit of disadvantaged people and groups.</li>
<li><b>Innovation</b>: The voluntary organization will demonstrate advances in approach or technique, possibly applying ideas originating from other social, corporate or Government sectors.</li>

After a final short list of the awardees is made, this is referred to a respected citizen of Bangalore, like Justice Michael Saldanha, Dr Samuel Paul, Rtn PDG Rajendra Rai, for finalizing the selection. The awardee is then finally approved by Rotary Club of Bangalore, which presents the award at a Club Meeting. The Award is a plaque and donation. Two awards have been planned. The first for INR 25,000 and the second of INR 15,000.</div>

For Dawoodi Bohra community, who are followers of Syedna Mohammed Burhanuddin (TUS), month of Muharram is very significant. People of the community would travel long distances to listen to the sermons by Syedna (TUS). This year, Syedna(TUS) is presiding the congregation in the city of Mumbai (India) and people from all over the world are pouring in there. Resident Bohras of Mumbai would make comfortable arrangements for stay and food for people coming from outside of Mumbai.</div>

This ritual has its roots in an event that supposedly took place 4000 years ago. Prophet Abraham was asked by God to sacrifice something that is most dear to him. For Abraham, his son Ismael was most dearest since after several decades of yearning and prayers he was blessed with his son Ismael. So, he chose to sacrifice Ismael. Ismael, as an obedient son, consented to his father's wish and willingly chose to give up his life. God, supposedly pleased with this devotion, spared Ismael's life and happily accepted sacrifice of a lamb instead.</div>
